ENDOGENOUS HEALTH FINANCING MECHANISMS (EHFM/MEFS) strategy: The mayor of the city of Thiès gives CICODEV a carte blanche

Thies, city of the railroad, former crossroads of the kingdoms of Djolof, Cayor and Baol, proudly displays its past. Formerly called “the city with two stations,” by its inhabitants, Thies is located 70km from Dakar, appearing on a map, as a crown around the Cape Verde peninsula. Thies is an enchanting city where a mat serves as the office of the revolutionary mayor of a dynamic city animated by different actors with multiple facets.

Focal Point Profile

Mrs. Awa kanouté is a leader in enrolling organized groups into mutual health organizations in Thies. She enrolled 265 people since December of 2018, when she joined CICODEV. Thanks to her, the organized groups in West Thies have joined mutual health organizations in large numbers through Endogenous Health Financing Mechanisms (EHFM/MEFS).

A perfectionist to the tip of her fingernails, Awa Kanouté leaves no stone unturned and works with great energy and intelligence towards making CICODEV an NGO that is heard and respected in the Thies region. The fruits have fulfilled the flowers’ promise because in Thies, CICODEV Africa is an NGO that is well established at the grassroots level. It is, without a doubt, for this reason that the city’s, Talla Sylla, declared “Gno far!” (Wolof for ‘We are together!’) to CICODEV’s delegation!

Field visits and community conversations held by CICODEV’s Access to Health/ Universal Health Coverage team in Thies, on Tuesday, December 8, 2020.
