Matam. The series of field visits and community conversations by the CICODEV team led by the Executive Director Mr. Amadou Kanouté continues.
The purpose of this visit is to formally introduce the CICODEV Focal Point to the authorities of the region. Later on in the day, a community conversation will be organized. The meeting aims to encourage a community-based approach to health financing in addition to state financing, through the Endogenous Health Financing Mechanisms (EHFM).
After traveling for 7 hours and 695 km, Matam appeared under the blazing sun. This agricultural town nestled in the heart of the ferlo extends along the river, facing Mauritania. Matam was named after a department before becoming a region in 2002. A Halpular bastion, the town is the result of an oath of fraternity and Pacific cohabitation between the Fulani and fishermen that the gently rolling waves have entrusted to the river’s protective spirits.
The conquest and partition of the Walo lands, the trade of arabic gum as well as the presence of commercial centers have favored the arrival of migrants in the locality.
Matam is also the symbol of anti-colonial resistance, the city was taken over as a fortress under Commander Paul Holl and the fort was built in 1857.
Focal point introduction:
Ibrahima Thioune, the false shy! Beneath his stern exterior, he is a natural prankster. Thioune guarantees a smile, laughter and even a burst of laughter to everyone. The focal point of CICODEV in the Matam region, recruited in February of 2020, has made an impact, with 300 enrollments during this field visit. His long-term presence in the associative movement is the basis of his notoriety in the “Dandé mayo”, which means on the banks of the river, the other name of the Matam region.
