Promoting universal, equal and improved access to drinking water is a priority for the
government of Senegal.
In Senegal, the overall access rate to water is 98.8% in urban areas and 91% in rural
areas.
However, the rates of access to sanitation remain low: 42.3% in rural areas and
67.4% in urban areas, according to figures from the Ministry of Hydraulics and
Sanitation (2018).
Compared to 2012, where these figures were 35.6% in rural areas and 47.4% in
urban areas, there has been some improvement.
The CICODEV Africa program aims to place access to water and sanitation at the
heart of the 2035 agenda, with higher access rates for rural areas and impoverished
consumers and also to influence the sector’s government (along with its practices
and behaviors) for equal and sustainable access and consumption, while taking into
account the risks induced by climate change.
