In Umul Qura, hard work has paid off! 210 “talibés” children in a boarding school located in the heart of the Pakao village, were enrolled into the Universal Health Coverage (CMU -Dara) on Wednesday, March 7, 2021.

A project of CICODEV’s which became a reality after 6 years of intense work of awareness-raising and mobilization conducted with the authorities and the religious leader, El Hadji Cheikh Sidya Dramé of Ndiama.

“I am happy about this event which is an immense pleasure for me because it fulfills my wish to have health coverage in the boarding school “Daraas” and for all. I have accompanied the Executive Director of CICODEV who made this event and these enrollments possible. After the Khalif General of the Mourides, Serigne Cheikh Sidy Moctar in 2018, the boarding school in Ndiama is the second to enroll its children “talibés” in the UHC-boarding school “Daraa” program,” rejoiced the Director General of ANACMU, Dr. Bocar Mamadou Daff.

The Executive Director of CICODEV, Amadou Kanouté thanked the audience before confiding that “this enrollment is the result of an awareness campaign conducted by CICODEV through its focal points in Kolda and Sédhiou. Our organization has canvased this land in recent years to explain to the religious leader Sheikh Sidya Dramé the importance of enrolling talibés into the UHC- Daraa program to ensure adequate health care at lower cost. We are happy today to see this project become a reality.

The enrolment ceremony took place at Daraa Umul Qura.  Wearing their best clothes, white caps neatly fitted on their heads, the students dazzled the audience with recitals of verses which they alone mastered in tone and wording.

The religious leader, Sheikh Sidya Dramé praised the mutual health organizations and thanked CICODEV for the work done in encouraging endogenous health financing mechanisms, before offering prayers for Senegal. After Touba, Umul Qura thus became the second to materialize the vision of the UHC-Dara.

An Endogenous Health Financing Mechanism promoted by CICODEV that advocates for a strong, resilient, adequately resourced health system that meets the needs of the most vulnerable—all the quintessence of its HEALTH program!

During his visit to Sedhiou, the Executive Director of CICODEV signed a partnership agreement with the community radio station Pakao Fm in Sedhiou. The 1st Deputy Mayor presided over the signing ceremony in the presence of several journalists from the locality.

This agreement aims to strengthen communication around the Health and REPROSOC projects but also the different programmatic focuses of the organization for improved grounding at the grassroots level.
