The Pan-African Institute for Citizenship, Consumers and Development (CICODEV-Africa), wants better protection for vulnerable groups. To help achieve this, a project to strengthen the involvement of civil society actors in social protection was launched yesterday, Tuesday, November 17.
The Executive Director of the Pan-African Institute for Citizenship, Consumers and Development (Cicodev-Africa), advocates for continued efforts around social protection. As he said yesterday, Tuesday, November 17, during the launch day of the project to strengthen civil society for an effective social protection policy in Senegal (REPROSOC).
For him, although there are several priorities for governments, social protection must be reinforced and made permanent because – he remains convinced – it is the lever of all economic and social development. He therefore calls for the creation of several platforms including that of local elected officials, parliamentarians and civil society so that together an advocacy campaign can be conducted in favor of increased investment in the protection of poor and vulnerable populations.
The representative of the Ministry of Community Development, Social and Territorial Equity, Virgnie Raphaelle Coly, agrees, “The primary objective of social safety net programs is the resilience of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups to poverty and vulnerability, it is imperative that our actions are supported by productive and income-generating activities because it has been found that social protection programs that develop these activities stimulate local economies while preventing the disadvantaged from falling back into poverty and were real guarantees of sustainable development and strengthening human capital,” She said before adding “the involvement of civil society in the social protection sector is an additional guarantee of performance and credibility especially in the targeting of beneficiaries of social nets and the implementation of integrated social protection programs.”
The project to reinforce civil society for an affective social protection policy in Senegal, is a joint initiative of CICODEV, the Laboratory of Economic Analysis and Social Transformations (Lartes) and the departmental council of Rufisque. The project is financed to the tune of more than 360 million FCfa over a period of three years (2020-2022). It will be implemented in five departments, namely Rufisque Matam, Fatick, Kédougou and Sédhiou. Its objective is to strengthen the involvement of actors and stakeholders in social protection and federate efforts for its sustainability in Senegal.
