CAP battles for robust consumer protection bill

The Consumer Advocacy Platform (CAP) on Monday presented its comments and proposals to officers of the Ministry of Consumer Protection in view to strengthen the Consumer Protection Bill 2014.

The presentation took place during a meeting at the Ministry in Port Louis with the president of CAP, Mosadeq Sahebdin and Amadou Kanouté on one side and the PS of the Ministry of Consumer Protection, K. Conhye and Messrs Seegoolam, Seetohul, Bhoyroo and Ramessur on the other. In his presentation the president of CAP underlined the necessity to specify in clause 4 of the Bill the 8 Consumer rights universally accepted and an adequate representation at the National Consumer Council and to bring amendments as to the term of council members.

Mosadeq Sahebdin was also appraised by the officers of the Ministry of amendments brought to the draft bill after its presentation for first reading at the National Assembly, for example, the setting up of a Consumer Tribunal instead of a Consumer Disputes Resolution Commission. Additional comments such as abusive notices, pyramid selling and misleading advertisements were also discussed between CAP and the Ministry.

Amadou Kanouté, head of CICODEV Africa, the pan African Institute for Consumer Citizenship and Development, who accompanied Mosadeq Sahebdin in the discussions, told News on Sunday that he was impressed with the high level of understanding between the advocacy group and the ministry officials and hoped that the new consumer protection bill will help at offering a better protection to Mauritian consumers.
